Behind the Walls
Behind the Walls (BTW) is the heart of the Corrections Workgroup's service: regular, in-person Narcotics Anonymous meetings held inside Florida's correctional institutions, carried in by trained and cleared outside volunteers.
These aren't improvised gatherings. Every BTW meeting follows a structured model built on decades of "Behind the Walls" experience from NA programs across the United States — and it's explicitly designed so that the meeting an inmate attends inside matches what they'll find in the community after release. Same format, same literature, same program.
How a BTW meeting works
- Volunteers have a minimum of one year clean, complete all Florida DOC-required training, and pass background checks through the DOC's Office of Programs and Re-entry Volunteer Services.
- Entry is gender-matched — male volunteers into male facilities, female volunteers into female facilities.
- Meetings focus on the 12 Steps and use only worldwide Fellowship-Approved NA literature, provided free in English and Spanish where available.
- The long-term goal is for inmates to lead the meetings themselves, with outside volunteers eventually attending as participants rather than chairpersons.
Where meetings are running
The Coverage Map tracks every facility in the state: where CW meetings are active, where meetings exist but aren't CW-affiliated, and where there's no known meeting at all.
