Work Behind the Walls
Recovery isn't just attending meetings — it's working the steps. Work Behind the Walls (formerly known as the Inmate Step Working Guide program) pairs outside volunteers with incarcerated addicts to work through the 12 Steps in a question-and-answer format, entirely by mail.
How it works
- An inmate works through step-writing questions and mails in their answers.
- A volunteer reads, responds, and guides them to the next set of questions.
- All correspondence is anonymous — handled through the program, protecting both the volunteer and the inmate, in keeping with NA's traditions.
For addicts in facilities without meetings, this can be the deepest NA experience available to them — a sponsor-like relationship, one envelope at a time.
Volunteering for correspondence work doesn't require facility clearance or
travel — it's service you can do from your kitchen table.
